bwtech Client Spotlight: Natáur Pioneers Bio-Based Innovation with Eco-Friendly Taurine

At bwtech, we are proud to support companies that combine science and innovation to drive sustainability and health for a better world. One exciting example is Natáur, a company using its proprietary Platform Technology to develop eco-friendly, health-conscious compounds–starting with a revolutionary product: Bio-Taurine.

Taurine, a naturally occurring compound found in many energy drinks, health supplements, and animal feed, is traditionally produced from fossil fuels, through chemical synthesis methods that are resource-intensive and environmentally taxing and often contain toxic residue. Natáur is changing the game.

By using safe, engineered microbes, Natáur offers a natural, eco-friendly taurine solution—delivered in ready-to-use form via contract manufacturing partners. This approach drastically reduces environmental impact while maintaining high standards of purity and performance.

What sets Natáur apart is its scalable platform, designed to create a wide range of bio-compounds beyond taurine. Their technology integrates cutting-edge synthetic biology with green chemistry principles, allowing for the development of healthy, sustainable compounds that are good for people and the planet.

Natáur was founded at bwtech in 2021 by Drs. Daphne Preuss (CEO), Kathleen Turano (COO/President) and Frank Turano (Chief Research Officer). Last year, Francesca Gallucci joined the team to lead product commercialization. The company has been active members of the bwtech community—participating in bwtech’s STARTUP Accelerator and SCALEUP Maryland programs, attending countless networking events, and providing valuable internship opportunities to UMBC students through the Career Center.

With a growing global demand for sustainable ingredients, Natáur is well-positioned to make a meaningful impact across industries, including health, wellness, personal care, and more. We’re proud to support Natáur’s journey and excited to see the impact they’ll make as they grow.
