Since 1989, bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park has been the space where innovation, experience, and research converge to foster the growth of businesses as well as local and state economies.
As a university-affiliated research park featuring Cyber, GovTech, and BioTech Incubators, bwtech@UMBC facilitates the advancement of companies at all stages of development. It’s where great ideas and startup companies can find the support they need to actualize their commercial potential.
bwtech is a community centered on the intersection of entrepreneurship and university technology that can meet the needs of startup companies in ways few other research and technology parks can. bwtech advantages include a detailed analysis of business opportunities and technology potential to help companies commercialize their ideas. Additionally, bwtech can also assist members in finding the startup and growth capital that businesses need to reach new heights. And, by offering several other beneficial services such as help with company formation and license agreements as well as key employee agreements, bwtech can put members on the path to success.
Additionally, bwtech’s strategic location is in close proximity to the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. And, it is also located within an SBA HUBzone as well as the Baltimore/Washington D.C. corridor, offering members a combination of area-specific advantages that can only be found at bwtech. Another excellent feature of bwtech is that it is populated with students and alumni who bring business and technology to our facilities from UMBC, fueling collaboration and economic opportunities.
Space, Resources, and Help
In addition to receiving guidance from experienced entrepreneurs and staff, members can also find the space, resources, and help needed to see their projects succeed. Researchers benefit from Entrepreneurs in Residence who can offer assistance with commercial planning, strategy, and development. In addition, UMBC alumni build upon what they have learned while bringing their talents and ideas back to the university and taking them to the next level. And, UMBC students also benefit by receiving real-world experience that can prepare them for their careers. The synergy of each of these groups working together in a shared space has greatly contributed to bwtech@UMBC’s record of success and the achievements of its members.
Today, bwtech@UMBC’s North and South campuses house 131 companies and organizations. Combined, they employ nearly 1,900 people and have generated $700M in labor income and business sales. Because of bwtech’s access to a diverse research base at UMBC, experienced entrepreneurs, and strong relationships with valued partner organizations and sponsors, entrepreneurs in Maryland, the United States, and around the world can achieve more with bwtech@UMBC.
